Malta is the ideal destination to combine your Mediterranean holiday with learning the English language.
This quaint European island in the southern Mediterranean Sea, located to the south of Italy is an obvious tourist hot spot thanks to it’s idyllic location and balmy climate. Malta has also become an ideal study destination for language schools in recent decades due to English being an official language on the island. Ever since Malta’s entry into the British Empire almost every Maltese inhabitant speaks fluent English.
Malta has a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate with warm seawater, very mild winters and hot summers. The island also benefits from a well-developed hotel and gastronomic scene.
Cavendish School is located in the heart of the capital, Valletta, which has been named as a UNESCO world heritage site. UNESCO described Valetta as ‘One of the most concentrated historic areas in the world.’
Why a language school in Valletta?
Valletta is full of beautiful architecture built by the Knights of St. John between the 16th and 17th centuries, the founder decreed that it was ‘a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen’. You can still see this today with most of the original architecture well-preserved. There are high walls surrounding the peninsula with many buildings in baroque style.
Valletta is the smallest capital within the EU. One huge advantage is that everything can be easily reached on foot. The charming capital is a vivid, cultural and economic centre. There are many bars, cafes, restaurants and shops to enjoy in your leisure time as well as cinemas and theatres including the oldest used baroque theatre in Europe.
From Valletta you can easily travel to other destinations on the island as the coach station is only a 3-4 minute walk away from our school. It is very easy to visit the medieval city of Mdina or the sandy beaches of Malta after your lessons. The journey on the bus to every part of the island is short and inexpensive. You can also walk to many destinations such as Sliema which is only 15-20 minutes away.

Mornings
Morning lessons will be between 8:25 and 12:50 with teachers who are experienced at making English fun and easy to learn. Hostel
Hotel
The Mediterranean Sea is ideal for all watersports and sea swimming round the coves but most especially diving. Malta is one of the world’s finest diving locations with sunken WWII bombers and undersea caves to explore. On land Malta’s other hidden treasures include some of the world’s most impressive prehistoric sites including giant cliff top temples and a 5,000 year old underground necropolis.
Valletta has a cinema with eight halls and every film is shown in English. Concerts by international artists, theatre and art exhibitions take place almost all year round (September to June). There are also open-air events, like traditional productions of Shakespeare in the gardens of the presidential palace and the annual festival of jazz on the quay of the Grand Harbour (July) or the annual fireworks festival all around the island. The museums are open all year, as are the pubs, nightclubs and restaurants.
The importance of the Catholic Church is represented by many festivals (festas) in the villages and towns on the island. From June to September no week goes by without there being a festa somewhere in Malta or Gozo. During these festivals the village and the church are decorated with thousands of lights and the community worships their patron saint by way of a musical pilgrimage through the village. The highlight of every festa are the fireworks.
In the Sea
Wherever you are on the island, you’re always close enough to enjoy watersports, diving and relaxing which are all within easy reach and available all year round.
Comino’s Blue Lagoon with it’s white sand is the top spot for swimming closely followed by Wied il-Ghasr, St. Peter’s Pool and Fomm ir-Rih. If you prefer to be more active then Mellieha Bay offers windsurfing, kitesurfing, waterskiing, canoeing, banana boating and parasailing.
Diving
Malta is Europe’s best diving destination and it’s easy to understand why with the clear, deep blue water around Malta as well as the dramatic coastline. With a clear view underwater, often more than 40 meters visibility, the extraordinary world of coral reefs, caves, grottos and WWII relics are perfect for divers and underwater photographers. Because of the diversity of species, the very good water quality and the excellent view of the rocky sea bed, the diving areas around Malta are said to be one of the best in the world to view sealife. What’s more, whatever your ability is, this underwater experience is open to all.
Food and Entertainment
In the main streets of Valletta as well as on the shore there are various restaurants, which offer very good food. The variety is so superb, that you will never have to visit the same restaurant twice.
Also in other parts of Malta and on Gozo there are a variety of pubs, wine bars, night clubs and restaurants, which offer local cuisine as well as food from all over the world.
Golf and Walking
Malta’s golf course is located close to Valletta and welcomes its guests all year round. Golf equipment can be rented and you can also book golf classes if you like. The school is happy to find out prices for you.
In and around Valletta is a lot of development, but along the cliff line on the west of the island, in the north and on Gozo there is still beautiful countryside, to take longer walks and go on excursions. Tours can be organized by yourself or the staff of our school– all you need are sturdy shoes and sun block – also during winter months.
